On February 27th, SWE and WIEP partnered with Illinois Tool Works (ITW) for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Including a panel of engineers in the industry, technical lessons from ITW engineers, a team-based design project, and a networking luncheon with faculty members of the UIC College of Engineering, IGED provided over 30 female high school students with a knowledge-packed, fun-filled experience.
One of the first events of the day was a discussion panel consisting of Anna Ky, Meghan Gallagher, and Jennifer Perr, who shared their experiences working as engineers. Students’ questions ranged from inquiring about their opportunities to travel the world from their careers to their experiences in college.
After an hour of the discussion panel, engineers from ITW provided a technical lesson for the upcoming team project of the day, where the students were split into teams of five and, using their knowledge of anatomy, force and pressure, designed convertible shoes, either heel-to-flat, sneaker-to-heel, or heel-to-sandal.
The day culminated to a networking lunch with various faculty members of the UIC College of Engineering. A huge thank you to ITW and everyone who made IGED such an exciting and memorable experience for our prospective students!
